Which Type of Model 70 Winchester Rifle?

Step 1: Determine the model type of your Model 70 Winchester rifle

It was possible to purchase any one of 11 model (types), with variations (date manufactured) in the Model 70 Winchester.  The standard rifle had a plain walnut checkered pistol walnut stock.  Deluxe model types had different stocks and may have had  other added features.

Use the Key to determine which gun you have.  Start at "a" and if this is not your gun, then  move on to "b," and so forth through the other choices until you find the one that best describes your gun.  Follow the path through the key to determine your rifle model type, confirm with the overall descriptions, then record the information in the box to the right.  These guns were very popular and some have gone through many hands.  Each owner had an opportunity to modify the gun, add parts, change parts, and remove features.  In the Model 70 check carefully that the serial number on the bolt matches the one on the rifle.  Be alert for such modifications, and remember that any modification from the original probably decreases value.
