A Winchester Model 1892 rifle that is in pretty good condition. The serial number is 284268 which places production in the early 1905. This rifle is chambered for the much-sought-after .38 WCF (.38-40) and has the less-common 24 inch round barrel. The bore is bright and shiny, with rifling visible throughout and some markings in the lans. The metal finish is a mostly smooth brown patina and only a few minor spots of lighter color on the metal surfaces. The receiver would rate ~ 85% cover, the barrel ~ 65% and the full magazine 75%. The front sight is a period special order Marbles #3 while the rear sight is the correct Winchester semi-buckhorn type with patent dated elevator. The gun has been used a little over the years, but was well taken care of and not abused. Both pieces of wood show their age and the buttstock looks to have been sanded a long time ago. The forend has a noticeable gouge on the right side, just forward of the receiver, but this does not affect structural integrity of the wood. There is a very small tight crack just starting on the left side at the wrist, and a small chip missing to the right side of the upper tang, otherwise all wood solid and tight to metal parts. The mechanics appear to be in excellent working order and all internal parts original Winchester issue. Hammer-spring is still strong and the bolt fits tightly to receiver. A C&R License is acceptable for transfer of this gun.
