A very early 1899 Short-rifle Savage with 22 inch barrel. This 1899-A is chambered in 30-30 caliber. Tang peep sight and all original issue front post and rear flat buckhorn sight. This gun's serial number of 84277 places production in early 1905. Bore is in excellent condition. Metal is good with case hardening gone from receiver and finger lever, but some bluing remaining on the barrel. Wood with handling marks; forearm solid and stock slightly loose. All internal parts function properly. A very nice shooting gun at a reasonable price. This gun comes from the most famous line of rifles ever manufactured by the Savage Arms Company. These guns were an improvement over the Model 1895 having a squared-off front end of breech bolt and cocking indicator as opposed to viewing-hole indicator. The 1899-A Short Rifle was the first gun in this series and was chambered for 6 calibers with a 22” barrel. Guns in the 1899-A Series were produced between 1899-1922 and are found with serial numbers between 10,000 to 300,000. The gun metal retains over 90% bluing on the barrel with the rear portion starting to turn a brown patina. There is approximately 25% on the receiver, with almost all bluing is gone from the lower receiver and metal edges. The original curved metal butt plate has been replaced with a ‘Noshoo’ rubber butt plate. The wood is in fair condition with numerous scratches and handling marks on the forearm and stock. There is old worn diamond checkering on the wood. The gun has an added marbles tang sight.
